In the southernmost part of Yosemite National Park, Mariposa Grove is a majestic forest of towering giant sequoias. It’s the largest grove in the park, home to several hundred of these ancient, awe-inspiring trees—two of which rank among the 30 largest giant sequoias in the world. With recently renovated trails and walkways, Mariposa Grove offers a perfect blend of natural wonder and accessibility, making it a must-see when visiting Yosemite.
To Get There
Mariposa Grove is located near Yosemite’s southern entrance, about an hour’s drive from Yosemite Valley. If you’re coming from outside the park, the South Entrance is easily accessible from Highway 41. Once you arrive, parking is available at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza, with a free shuttle service transporting visitors to the grove from spring through fall.
Pro Tip: If you’re visiting during the off-season or when the shuttle isn’t running, it’s a 2-mile uphill walk from the parking area to the grove. Be sure to plan accordingly!

- Water available at the Welcome Plaza
When to Go
While Mariposa Grove is open year-round, the best times to visit are spring, summer, and early fall. In spring, the forest awakens with lush greenery, while summer offers warm weather perfect for leisurely hikes. Fall brings cooler temperatures and vibrant foliage that contrasts beautifully with the sequoias’ red bark.
Winter visits are magical too, as the grove transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, but some trails may be inaccessible. Always check the park’s website for current conditions before heading out.
The Trails of Mariposa Grove
Mariposa Grove offers trails for all levels of hikers, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging loops. Here’s a quick overview of the options:

Grizzly Giant Loop Trail (2 miles)
A moderately easy hike that includes the iconic Grizzly Giant and California Tunnel Tree.
Guardians Loop Trail (6.5 miles)
A longer, moderately challenging trail that takes you deeper into the grove’s tranquil beauty.
Mariposa Grove Trail (7 miles)
A more ambitious loop for seasoned hikers seeking an immersive sequoia experience.
Highlights of Mariposa Grove
On our trip, we combined the Big Trees Loop with the Grizzly Giant Loop, which led us to some of the grove’s most famous trees. Walking among these massive, centuries-old giants felt almost surreal—their towering presence is humbling and awe-inspiring.
The Fallen Monarch
This enormous tree, now resting on the forest floor, showcases the incredible size of these giants. Its exposed root system, spanning 15 feet across, offers a glimpse into the strength and resilience of these ancient trees.

The Grizzly Giant
One of the largest and most famous trees in the grove, the Grizzly Giant is estimated to be over 1,800 years old. Standing before its gnarled trunk and sprawling branches, it’s hard not to feel a sense of reverence for nature’s grandeur.

The California Tunnel Tree
A unique feature of Mariposa Grove, this is the only living sequoia with a tunnel carved through it that visitors can walk through. It’s a fun photo opportunity and a fascinating piece of history, dating back to the late 1800s.
