A Brief History of Sunnylands

Sunnylands is far more than an estate—it’s a hub for international diplomacy. The Annenbergs, who were prominent philanthropists and ambassadors, built this estate in the 1960s. Over the years, it became a retreat for U.S. presidents, foreign dignitaries, and cultural icons. Presidents from Dwight Eisenhower to Barack Obama have walked the grounds of Sunnylands, making it a site of significant historical importance.

In addition to its role as a diplomatic retreat, Sunnylands was also a place where the Annenbergs hosted numerous celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, who even got married on the property.

The Gardens

One of the estate’s most stunning features is the 9-acre garden that surrounds the visitor center. This landscape was designed by architect James Burnett and showcases over 70,000 arid plants, creating a vibrant tapestry of color and texture against the desert backdrop. The gardens also feature a serene Reflections pool, two labyrinths for quiet contemplation, and a charming café where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The House: A Mid-Century Modern Masterpiece

Sunnylands is also renowned for its architecture. The main house is designed by A. Quincy Jones, an influential American architect known for his contributions to Mid-Century Modern design. Its clean lines, floor-to-ceiling windows, and use of natural light showcase the era’s design ethos of bringing the outside in. While tours of the main house are limited, they provide a glimpse into the life of the Annenbergs, their impressive art collection, and the many historical moments that unfolded here.

On the tour you are able to see the world-class art collection, featuring works by Picasso, Van Gogh, and Andrew Wyeth. Just to set expectations, many of the original art pieces have been replaced with replicas, as the originals have been donated to museums. The house also has a distinctly personal touch, with family photos and mementos that remind visitors this was once a home.

Art and Exhibits

The visitor center hosts rotating art exhibits that are free to the public. These exhibitions often focus on themes of diplomacy, architecture, or art history, continuing the Annenberg’s legacy of fostering education and cultural enrichment. It’s a great place to start your visit, as it provides context about the estate’s history, as well as the Annenbergs’ impact on art and international relations.

Sunnylands has also served as a venue for the biennial Desert X exhibitions.

With its peaceful desert setting, thoughtful design, and rich history, Sunnylands offers true cultural enrichment in the California desert.
