Rodenbach Brewery in Roeselare: Where Rich History Meets Bold, Sour Brews

Table of Contents

In the heart of Roeselare, Belgium, Rodenbach Brewery was our final stop on the Flanders beercycling tour—and it felt like the perfect grand finale. Of all the brewery tours we experienced, this one felt the most corporate, but it also delivered an incredibly unique tasting experience. The beers here are unlike any other—aged in towering oak barrels that impart a distinct, slightly sour flavor that lingers on your palate in the best way.

When To Go

The best time to visit Rodenbach is in summer (June–August) when the weather is ideal for cycling and exploring the region. July, when we visited, offered warm days and vibrant beer culture events across Flanders.

Visiting Rodenbach in Roeselare

We rolled into Roeselare ready for our last pour of Belgium’s best. The Rodenbach grounds strike an industrial note, with tall brick buildings hinting at the long legacy of brewing behind those walls. While the tour felt more structured and polished compared to the more laid-back stops on our beer journey, it was no less impressive.

Our guide—an older woman who had spent decades employed at the brewery, walked us through Rodenbach’s deep roots. She knew every detail like it was part of her own story, and her pride in the brewery’s legacy was infectious.

One of the most striking parts of the visit was stepping into the massive barrel aging room. The air was cool and damp, heavy with the scent of oak and fermentation. There are rows of enormous wooden barrels, the largest I’ve ever seen. This is how Rodenbach’s signature flavor is infused.

There’s also a spacious event room with long tables running down the center, perfect for private gatherings or celebrations. Believe it or not, some people even choose to get married right here—inside one of the historic barrel rooms, surrounded by the rich character and charm of Rodenbach’s brewing legacy.

At the end of the tour, we gathered in the tasting room where our group of twelve shared samples around a massive barrel that had been repurposed into a circular tasting table. It was a fun and communal way to wrap up the experience—standing around the very kind of barrel that gives Rodenbach its signature flavor, swapping tasting notes and soaking in the history one sip at a time.

The History of Rodenbach

Rodenbach’s roots stretch back to the early 19th century, and it’s now world-famous for perfecting the art of Flemish red-brown ale. What makes the beer here stand out is a unique brewing method that combines young beer with mature, oak-aged beer. It’s a process that results in complex, slightly sour flavors and a deep reddish hue.

This distinctive technique that’s been developed and refined over generations is what sets Rodenbach apart. It’s a taste of history, crafted with time and care.

Where To Stay

We didn’t stay overnight in Roeselare, as this was a stop on our cycling tour. But if you’re planning a visit on its own, consider staying nearby in Boutique Hotel Ter Wallen, so you can explore the town at your own pace.

Additional Tips

  • Book in advance. Tours fill up quickly, especially in summer.
  • Dress in layers. The barrel room is damp and cooler than the rest of the facility.
  • Ask questions. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate—it’s worth engaging!
