In the heart of the Mojave Desert near Joshua Tree National Park, Pappy & Harriets is a one-of-a-kind spot that combines history, music, and mouthwatering food. Located in Pioneertown, a quirky town originally built in the 1940s as a movie set for Old Westerns, this iconic venue offers a rustic charm and a vibrant energy that’s perfect for an unforgettable desert outing. Whether you’re a music lover, foodie, or history buff, Pappy & Harriets has something special in store.
To get there
Reaching Pappy & Harriets is an adventure in itself. From Joshua Tree National Park, it’s a scenic drive through winding desert roads that lead to Pioneertown. From Los Angeles, the trip takes about 2.5 hours, making it an excellent day trip or weekend escape. Look for signs pointing toward Pioneertown Road off Highway 62—it’s a straight shot to this iconic destination.
Pro Tip: The road to Pioneertown has its share of twists and turns, so plan to arrive before sunset for the best views and easier navigation.
When to Go
Pappy & Harriet’s is worth visiting year-round, but timing your trip can elevate the experience. Cooler months, from October to April, are ideal for exploring the desert and catching an evening concert without the sweltering heat.
If you’re a fan of live music, check the venue’s schedule in advance. They host an impressive lineup of artists, from up-and-coming indie bands to big-name acts like Sir John McCartney, who performed here in 2016. Imagine enjoying world-class music under the vast desert sky—it’s an experience you won’t forget. I saw Bob Moses and Miike Snow here and it was amazing! I’ve seen a few smaller name shows inside and it was also incredibly lively. Just note it’s tough to get any rideshares from here because the service is terrible.

About Pappy & Harriets: A Slice of Desert Charm
Walking into Pappy & Harriets feels like stepping into a scene from an old Western movie. The rustic decor features aged wood accents, taxidermy, and vintage music posters that tell stories of the past. It’s a place steeped in character and soul.
The food at Pappy & Harriets is just as memorable as the ambiance. Known for its hearty, barbecue-style American cuisine, the menu is a feast for the senses. Whether you’re indulging in smoky ribs with a side of baked beans and slaw (my personal favorite) or savoring a juicy burger, every bite is a celebration of flavors. Pair your meal with one of their strong cocktails or a locally brewed beer for the ultimate desert dining experience.
