If you’re heading to French Polynesia, don’t just stop at Tahiti—make time for Moorea, a lush island just a 30-minute ferry ride away. Think jagged mountain peaks, turquoise lagoons, and jungle trails waiting to be explored. We spent several adventurous days on Moorea and discovered that this island offers a little bit of everything: epic snorkeling, scenic hikes, off-road thrills, and serene beach vibes. Here are 10 unforgettable things to do on Mo’orea that will make you fall in love with this tropical gem.

Snorkel with Reef Sharks, Manta Rays & Sea Turtles

Moorea Ocean Adventures was one of the best tours we did—they choose locations based on the weather conditions. We started in a shallow lagoon surrounded by reef sharks and manta rays gliding beneath us. Then we ventured into the deep blue for a more intense snorkel with even more black tip reef sharks, plus a lemon shark sighting. The final stop was a channel near Coco Beach with a soft current that gently carried us past sea turtles and (if you’re lucky) eagle rays. Our guide Nina was incredibly knowledgeable and had such a fun, bubbly personality—she made the whole day even better.

Go Off-Roading on an ATV Tour

For a dose of adventure, we joined an ATV tour that took us deep into the interior of Moorea. We drove through muddy trails surrounded by vibrant tropical flora and explored pineapple plantations nestled in the valleys. Highlights included panoramic views from Belvedere Lookout and a thrilling climb up Magic Mountain for postcard-worthy scenery.

Hike to Afareaitu Waterfalls

This 2.7-mile out-and-back trail is easy to moderate, though it gets a bit slippery if it’s rained recently. Along the way, you’re surrounded by lush vegetation and the sound of birds echoing through the jungle. The reward? A peaceful, refreshing waterfall tucked away in the greenery.

Lunch with a View at the Tropical Garden of Mo’orea

Set high in the hills, the Tropical Garden is not just about the flora. The garden’s café serves up fresh, local fare with one of the best views on the island. I had a delicious fish sandwich while sipping from a freshly cracked coconut, gazing out at the ocean below. Just know the pace is island-time slow—so come hungry, but patient.

Take in the Views at Belvedere Lookout

One of the most iconic viewpoints on Moorea, Belvedere Lookout offers sweeping views of Mount Rotui flanked by Opunohu and Cook’s Bays. It’s accessible by car or ATV, and the morning light makes it especially magical for photos.

Dive with Massive Lemon Sharks

Scuba diving with Nemoz Diving was one of the most thrilling things we did. Hanging out 60 feet below the surface, we watched two massive lemon sharks circling us calmly. It was intimidating for sure, but also awe-inspiring. If you stay calm, maintain eye contact, and stick with your group, it’s a heart-pounding but safe experience.

If you go to Moorea during whale season, August through October, you can also swim or dive with humpback whales.

Watch a Polynesian Show at Sofitel

Even if you’re not staying at the Sofitel, you can still buy tickets for their dinner and show. Expect a buffet of traditional Polynesian food followed by vibrant performances of fire dancing and traditional Tahitian dance. It’s touristy, yes—but also genuinely beautiful and culturally rich.

Spend a Day at Coco Beach

This chill beach spot is only accessible by boat (about 10 minutes from shore). Once you arrive, you can lounge on the sand, grab a beachside lunch, and snorkel right off the shore. It’s relaxed, scenic, and perfect for a lazy island afternoon.

Drive (or Hike) to Magic Mountain Lookout

This steep drive or short but intense hike ends with one of the best panoramic views on the island. You’ll see endless green ridges and blue bays stretching toward the horizon. Tip: wear good shoes and bring water if you choose to hike—it’s a workout, but worth every step.

Snorkel at Plage de Tiahura

This public beach park is perfect for a DIY snorkel session. Wander past roosters strutting through the park and head into the warm, clear water. We found beautiful sea anemones and plenty of colorful reef fish here. The beach also has freshwater showers, restrooms, and a great spot to watch the sunset.

Packing Essentials

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Snorkel gear (or rent locally)
  • Water shoes (best to have close toed)
  • Lightweight hiking shoes (or bring hefty Keen shoes that double up as water shoes and hiking shoes)
  • insta360, GoPro or other underwater camera

Moorea is a place where adventure meets serenity. Whether you’re swimming with sharks or sipping coconuts above the treetops, this island delivers unforgettable moments at every turn. If you’re planning a trip to French Polynesia, make sure Mo’orea is on your list. You won’t regret it.
