The Monteverde Zipline Adventure takes you into the heart of Costa Rica’s stunning cloud forest, a region known for its incredibly complex ecosystems. Here, misty treetops blend with a vibrant tapestry of flora and fauna, offering an unforgettable experience for both nature lovers and thrill-seekers. We chose this adventure to experience the longest zipline ride in Costa Rica, and it didn’t disappoint.
My friend and I spent a full day exploring this magical region with Mardigi Tours, and it was nothing short of spectacular. From the serene beauty of hummingbird gardens to the adrenaline rush of ziplining above the canopy, Monteverde exceeded every expectation.
To Get There
To get to Monteverde, Costa Rica, you can fly into San José International Airport (SJO), which is about a 3-4 hour drive away. From there, you can either rent a car, take a shuttle, or use a local bus service. Alternatively, you can fly into Liberia International Airport (LIR), which is a bit farther but still around a 3-3.5 hour drive to Monteverde. The roads are often unpaved and bumpy, especially during the rainy season, so a 4×4 vehicle is recommended for the best experience.

When To Go
The best time to visit Monteverde, Costa Rica, is during the dry season from December to April, when the weather is ideal for outdoor activities like ziplining and hiking. However, the rainy season (May to November) offers lush greenery and fewer crowds, making it a great time for those seeking a quieter experience.
The Hummingbird Gardens
Our day began with a visit to the hummingbird gardens, a tranquil space alive with the flutter of wings. Multiple feeders were set up, attracting 14 different species of hummingbirds. Their vibrant colors and diverse sizes were mesmerizing—ranging from tiny, jewel-like birds to the world’s largest hummingbird species.
Be warned, though: if you’re allergic to bees, keep an eye out. Bees are just as enamored with the sweet nectar as the birds, adding a little extra buzz to the experience.

Hanging Bridges in the Canopy
Next, we embarked on a nature walk along hanging bridges that stretched high above the treetops. These bridges offered breathtaking views of Monteverde’s lush greenery and cascading waterfalls far below. The perspective was humbling—you’re truly immersed in the grandeur of the cloud forest, with its towering trees and misty vistas.

Monteverde Zipline: The Longest in Costa Rica
The highlight of the day, and the moment I had been waiting for, was ziplining. The Monteverde zipline is Costa Rica’s longest, spanning an impressive 1 kilometer (over half a mile) across the rainforest.

This wasn’t just an ordinary zipline course. Some of the lines allowed us to ride tandem, others gave us the chance to go upside down, adding an extra thrill to the adventure. But the pièce de résistance was the grand finale: the superman-style ride.
Strapped into a harness facing forward, we soared over the treetops like flying squirrels, arms outstretched. The rush of the wind, the panoramic views of the rainforest, and the sheer speed made it an exhilarating, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

For me, this moment was particularly special. Back in 2005, when I lived in Costa Rica, I’d heard countless stories about this zipline but never had the chance to try it. A decade later, I finally got to live out that dream, and it was every bit as incredible as I had imagined.
Monteverde is paradise, from the colorful flurry of hummingbirds to the adrenaline-pumping thrill of ziplining over the forest, every part of this day felt magical.
If you’re in Costa Rica and looking for a blend of natural beauty and high-octane fun, I can’t recommend this trip with Mardigi Tours enough. It’s a memory that will stay with you long after the clouds of Monteverde have drifted into the distance.
