Lightning in a Bottle (AKA LIB) is one of California’s most beloved festivals, combining music, art, yoga, workshops, and a sense of community—all in a stunning outdoor setting near a lake in Bakersfield, CA. With camping and a lake to enjoy, packing strategically will ensure you’re ready for anything and can focus on soaking up the festival vibes. Below I’ve created a list of things you’ll need and why you’ll need them. Starting with camping and then moving on to festival attire. Below I’ve put together your ultimate Lightning in a Bottle Packing List.
Lightning in a Bottle Packing List: Camping Essentials
✓ Bring a Tent
Choose a reliable, weather-resistant tent that offers enough space for both your gear and sleeping area. Since LIB typically has warm days and cool nights, proper ventilation is essential. A mesh tent isn’t ideal in these conditions because there’s a lot of dust, but it can suffice. For a more weather-resistant option, a Shiftpod is a popular choice, though it comes with a hefty price tag, starting at $699 (as of 2025). A mesh tent is the cheapest if you’re on a budget and you can still get by with it.

✓ Pack Sleeping Gear
Pack a sleeping bag suitable for mild weather, a sleeping pad or inflatable mattress, and a small pillow. Or my favorite is a sleeping cot, it’s more comfortable than a sleeping pad and easier to set up than a inflatable mattress. If you’re car camping you can also just bring blankets and a pillow from your bed.

✓ Shade Solution
A pop-up canopy or shade tent will make your campsite much more comfortable during the day. This is more of a nice-to-have than a must-have.

✓ Lighting
Bring a headlamp, lanterns, and string lights to create ambiance and help you navigate your site after dark.

✓ Reusable Water Jugs
Stay hydrated! LIB has free water refill stations, so bring large refillable containers for your campsite. We like to bring a 5 gallon bottle with a automatic dispenser, this way you don’t have to tip the bottle to pour it out.

✓ Cooler & Food
Pack a cooler with ice packs to keep food and beverages fresh. Include easy-to-eat snacks like trail mix, granola bars, and fruit. The nice thing LIB is there are food vendors inside the festival and a few sprinkled throughout the campsites, so if you don’t want the hassle of bringing and making food, you can just purchase it.

✓ Portable Stove/Grill
If you plan to cook, bring a compact stove, fuel, and simple cookware. This is a great way to save money.

✓ Camping Chairs & Table
Camp chairs are fantastic for morning lounging and giving your legs a well-deserved break after all the walking and dancing. I highly recommend bringing one. I loved sitting in mine every morning with an iced latte from a nearby camp coffee shop.

Lightning in a Bottle Packing List: Clothing & Accessories
At Lightning in a Bottle, you can let your creativity fly! But keep in mind that a lot of the fashion that fuels LIB is also quite functional for the weather conditions and circumstances. Think lightweight, breathable clothing during the day and layers for cooler evenings. Embrace the creative and whimsical LIB spirit with metallics, vibrant colors, and unique accessories.

✓ Bandanas or Neck Gators
Neck bandanas and gaiters are versatile essentials at Lightning in a Bottle. They serve three key purposes: shielding your neck from the sun during the day, keeping dust out of your nose and mouth when the crowd stirs up dirt, and adding a fun pop of color to your festival outfits. Personally, I prefer neck gaiters over bandanas—they’re much easier to pull up over your face when the dust starts flying.

✓ Fur Coats
Lightning in a Bottle can get extremely hot during the day, but temperatures can dip into the 40s at night, so it’s essential to come prepared with a cozy faux fur coat or a thrifted one. Not only is fur warm and comfortable, but it also perfectly complements the festival’s vibrant, eclectic vibe.

✓ Swimwear
The lake is a must-visit! Pack swimsuits, quick-dry towels, and water shoes are also nice for wading in. We took a dip every morning to relax and refresh.
✓ Comfortable Shoes
You’ll be walking and dancing a lot! Bring broken-in sneakers, boots or sturdy sandals.

✓ Hats & Sunglasses
Protect yourself from the sun with a hat and sunglasses. Have fun with it! Find some cool styles online, or thrift them.

Lightning in a Bottle Packing List: Festival Must-Haves
✓ Daypack & Water Bottle or Hydration Pack
Get a wearable hydration pack or a reusable water bottle in a backpack so you can be hands-free as you move from stage to stage. There are refill stations all over the festival, so it’ll save you money and also save on the amount of waste. Carry essentials like sunscreen, lip balm, and snacks.

✓ Reusable Cup/Utensils
Avoid single-use plastics by bringing your own cup, plate, and utensils for camping.
✓ Earplugs
Protect your ears during loud performances.

✓ Portable Phone Charger
Keep your devices powered for capturing memories and staying connected with friends.
Lightning in a Bottle Packing List: Toiletries & Personal Care
✓ Eco-Friendly Soap & Shampoo
Use biodegradable products to stay clean while respecting nature.
✓ Face & Body Wipes
Face and body wipes are festival essentials for quick freshen-ups. Face mist is also nice on hot days, and argon oil is great for your hair.

✓ First Aid Kit
Include band-aids, pain relievers, and any personal medications.
Lightning in a Bottle Packing List: Extras for the Experience
✓ Reusable Pool Float
If you want to relax on the lake, bring a sturdy inflatable float.

✓ Yoga Mat
There are several day time activities including yoga and sound bowl meditations. Bring a yoga mat to join in on these sessions.

LIB thrives on positivity and community, so bring an open heart and a willingness to connect with others.
By planning ahead and following this Lightning in a Bottle Packing List, you’ll be well-prepared for an unforgettable experience. See you on the dance floor—or by the lake!
