To Get There

Hollyhock House is located in the charming Barnsdall Art Park in the heart of Los Angeles. When we arrived, it was a picture-perfect clear day, and the view was breathtaking. From the park, you can see Griffith Observatory perched on the hills in the distance. The park itself is a great place to go for a picnic before or after your tour.

When To Go

The best time to visit Hollyhock House is on a clear, sunny day when the views from Barnsdall Art Park truly shine. The mild weather in Los Angeles means you can plan a trip year-round, but spring and fall often offer the most pleasant temperatures. Keep in mind that weekends can get busy, so consider a weekday visit if you prefer a quieter experience.

The History

Hollyhock House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, who was a genius of innovative architectural vision. Designed in 1919 for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall, the house was intended to be the centerpiece of a larger arts and theater complex, though only this residence and a few additional structures were completed. Wright’s unique design incorporates elements of Mayan Revival architecture, featuring bold geometric forms, earthy materials, and an abundance of natural light. The house takes its name from Barnsdall’s favorite flower, the hollyhock, and its motif is integrated throughout the design in striking and unexpected ways.

This house is particularly significant as Wright’s first project in Los Angeles, paving the way for other landmarks in Southern California. In 2019, it earned the honor of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site, further cementing its place in architectural history.

The Self Guided Tour of Hollyhock

Visiting Hollyhock House is an intimate experience. The self-guided tour is small but affordable, making it accessible to a wide audience. Inside the house, there are docents stationed in each room that are eager to share fascinating details. We really enjoyed talking to these docents about the architecture, the furniture, and the history of the house. Wright’s custom furniture designs are scattered throughout, and the craftsmanship and attention to detail are stunning.

One things hat’s disappointing is that the exterior of the house is not open for exploration. It’s fenced in, limiting your ability to appreciate the outdoor spaces that were such an integral part of Wright’s designs. Still, the interior tour offers a glimpse into the genius of Wright’s work, making it a worthwhile visit for anyone interested in architecture or design.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House is a piece of history that embodies the creativity and forward-thinking of one of America’s greatest architects. While the restrictions on accessing the exterior may be a drawback, the beautiful interiors and the enriching experience of learning about Wright’s vision make it a must-see destination in Los Angeles. Pair your visit with a picnic in Barnsdall Art Park to soak in the stunning views, and you’ll have a memorable day exploring this stunning house.
