Snorkeling off the coast of Placencia in Belize is an unforgettable adventure into the Caribbean’s crystal-clear waters. Picture yourself cruising across the turquoise sea in a vibrant, rasta-colored speedboat, the warm breeze carrying the rhythm of island life. A refreshing sip of sweet mango rum punch adds a tropical flair, embodying the essence of “island time.” Our exploration took us to the enchanting Silk Cayes, starting with the tranquil shores of Rum Caye and ending with the lively charm of King Lewey Island.

When To Go
The best time to visit Placencia, Belize, is during the dry season, from November to May. Silk Cayes Boat Tour
Our Silk Cayes boat tour included stops at Rum Caye and King Lewey Island, two distinctly different yet equally captivating destinations. Rum Caye is a quaint fisherman’s island, offering a glimpse into a simple, traditional way of life. In contrast, King Lewey Island is a lively, built-up private resort featuring restaurants, accommodations, and a vibrant atmosphere. Each island brings its own unique charm, making both stops a fun and memorable part of the journey.
First Stop: Rum Caye
Our first stop was Rum Caye, a small local fisherman’s island. While the island showed signs of wear from regular use, the surrounding waters were pristine and breathtakingly clear. Belize takes great pride in preserving its reefs, and it truly shows here. Snorkeling around the island’s perimeter, we encountered an array of vibrant fish and even a massive stingray with an impressive 12-foot wingspan, a sight that left us in awe of the underwater world.

After our snorkeling adventure, our guide treated us to a delicious barbecue feast featuring juicy chicken, creamy pasta salad, and cheesy potatoes. The meal was hearty and satisfying, made even better by the fact that we had the entire island to ourselves. We soaked up the sunshine, enjoying the serenity and beauty of this incredible spot.

Second Stop: King Lewey Island
The next stop on our ocean tour was the vibrant and whimsical King Lewey Island, a tiny slice of paradise designed for fun and relaxation. This private island feels like a tropical playground, offering cozy cabanas for lounging, a lively bar serving refreshing cocktails, and a water trampoline for those looking to make a splash. There are also games scattered around the island, inviting you to engage in a little friendly competition, and hammocks swaying gently in the ocean breeze, perfect for unwinding with a view of the turquoise waters.

Adding to its charm, the island is home to resident nurse sharks, which can often be spotted finding shade in the shallow waters near the pool. These gentle creatures add a touch of wonder to the experience, reminding visitors of the unique marine life that thrives in the Caribbean. The combination of laid-back vibes and playful activities makes King Lewey Island a memorable and unique stop on the tour.

The highlight of our visit was bouncing on the trampoline set amidst the crystal-clear ocean. Surrounded by the shimmering turquoise waters and the endless horizon, it was an exhilarating and unforgettable experience.

Snorkeling off the coast of Placencia is an unforgettable, fun-filled day packed with adventure, relaxation, and incredible experiences. From snorkeling vibrant reefs teeming with marine life to exploring charming islands with unique personalities, every moment on the water felt like a dream. Whether you’re diving into crystal-clear waters, enjoying a delicious beachside barbecue, or simply soaking in the Caribbean sun, there’s no better way to experience the magic of Belize than by boat. If you’re visiting this beautiful country, make it a priority to get out on the water—it’s the ultimate way to connect with Belize’s stunning natural beauty and laid-back island vibes. Spend a day cruising the turquoise sea and create memories that will last a lifetime!
