Garage Conversion: Monochrome Bathroom

Table of Contents

When we decided to convert our garage into a functional living space, I knew I wanted a monochrome bathroom that felt like a stylish retreat. Designing a space from scratch is exciting, and for this project, I leaned into a timeless black, white, and grey palette for a sleek and modern look. To keep things from feeling too sterile, I incorporated touches of warmth and texture, creating a space that feels as inviting as it is functional.

Here’s a look into the design choices I made, from a fresh take on subway tiles to budget-friendly cabinets with a custom twist, along with some tips to inspire your next remodel.

Classic Monochrome Palette

Black, white, and grey are timeless colors that exude sophistication, and I leaned into this classic combo for a monochrome bathroom in our garage conversion. This monochromatic base creates a clean, modern aesthetic that feels effortlessly cohesive. To soften the look and add a bit of warmth, I chose light wood cabinets. This contrast helps balance the cool tones and makes the space feel inviting rather than stark.

Adding Layers of Character

For a pop of color and a touch of personality, I plan to incorporate an Vintage Oushak Rug, known for its intricate patterns and muted hues. Rugs like these can instantly elevate a space, adding both texture and warmth. To tie the look together, I’ll style with small accents like vases, perhaps in earthy or jewel tones, that complement the subtle colors in the rug. These finishing touches will make the space feel curated and complete.

Subway Tile With a Modern Twist

Subway tiles are a budget-friendly staple, but they don’t have to be boring. Instead of the classic offset pattern, I opted for an elongated version laid in a straight alignment. This creates a sleek, contemporary feel that is slightly unexpected while still staying true to the timeless charm of subway tiles. For those looking for something even more unique, arranging the tiles vertically can provide a modern, fresh take on a traditional look.

Meringue Matte 3×12 Subway Tile or Ivy Hill 3×9 Matte Ceramic Tile are good choses.

Budget-Friendly Cabinets With a High-End Look

To keep the budget in check without compromising style, I chose IKEA Godmorgon Floating Cabinets paired with upgraded faces from Semihandmade in Impression Tahoe and the IKEA Braviken Sink. This combo is a game-changer for anyone seeking a custom look on a budget. Semihandmade offers a variety of finishes and styles, allowing you to tailor the cabinets to fit your desired aesthetic. The light wood finish I selected adds a natural warmth that perfectly complements the monochrome scheme.
