The Yucatán Peninsula is synonymous with ancient Mayan ruins, drawing visitors from around the globe to marvel at towering pyramids and intricate carvings. While sites like Chichén Itzá and Tulum often headline itineraries, Ek Balam is an underrated destination that is a quieter alternative to the more tourist-heavy places. The ruins emerge from the dense jungle, a testament to their past as a thriving and powerful city within the ancient Mayan civilization.

We went to Ek Balam as part of a two part tour we did with Altournative from Play Del Carmen. It’s much less crowded and you can climb the main temple to see one of the best preserved stucco facades in Mesoamerica.

When To Go

The best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for exploring. Avoid the summer months (May to August) if possible, as the heat and humidity can be intense, and the rainy season may bring occasional downpours.

To Get There

To reach Ek Balam from Cancún, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum, you have several options:

The History of Ek Balam

We learned about the very interesting Mayan culture from our guides. Ek Balam, which translates to “Black Jaguar” in Mayan, was a thriving city between 600 and 1000 AD. It served as a powerful kingdom and was likely an important regional center during its peak. Unlike many other Mayan cities, Ek Balam was uniquely spared from extensive looting and destruction, allowing modern archaeologists to uncover its secrets in remarkable condition.

One of the most fascinating discoveries is the tomb of Ukit Kan Le’k Tok’, a ruler celebrated for his achievements in architecture and city-building. His burial site, located in the Acropolis, features intricate stucco carvings that depict divine beings and mythical creatures, showcasing the artistic brilliance of the Maya.

The Mayans had massive advancements in society while in contradiction worshipping disfigurement and human sacrifice.

Highlights of Ek Balam

The crown jewel of Ek Balam is the Acropolis, a massive pyramid-like structure that dominates the site. At 95 feet tall, it’s one of the tallest Mayan structures in the region. The steps to the top of the main temple are really steep with no railing. I wouldn’t recommend ascending if you’re afraid of heights. It can be dizzying for most looking down the narrow steps, but the view from the top is spectacular and worth the trek. We were rewarded with panoramic views of the lush jungle stretching as far as the eye can see. Temples rise out of the greenery.
