For the past several months, I’ve been working on a passion project with my parents: updating and furnishing a small studio in Joshua Tree to transform it into an inviting Airbnb. It’s been a labor of love, filled with creative brainstorming and endless inspiration. I’m excited to share the journey behind the design process, the choices we made, and how it all came together.

Modern Bohemian Meets Desert Vibes
I began by diving into a sea of ideas, turning to Pinterest as my go-to source of inspiration. I’ve always been drawn to a modern bohemian aesthetic—earthy, eclectic, and effortlessly chic. Given that Joshua Tree’s desert landscape is so uniquely rugged, I knew I wanted to reflect that natural beauty in the studio’s design. So I started envisioning a color palette that would capture the essence of the surrounding environment while adding a vibrant, welcoming twist.

Interior Design: Keeping it Light and Airy
Once we tackled the exterior, it was time to move inside. I wanted the studio to feel bright, open, and calm—a space where guests could unwind after a day of exploring the wonders of Joshua Tree. We decided on a combination of white and light grey for the walls, which immediately made the space feel more expansive and airy. The neutral backdrop also served as the perfect canvas for adding pops of color later.
Playing with Color: Dusty Rose and Sunshine Yellow
While the neutral base created a serene atmosphere, I wanted to introduce color in subtle yet impactful ways. After browsing through swatches and fabric samples, I was particularly drawn to shades of dusty rose and yellow. Dusty rose has this calming, almost nostalgic quality that pairs well with the bohemian vibe, while yellow—reminiscent of desert blooms and sunsets—added warmth and cheer. I used these colors in accents throughout the space, from throw pillows and rugs to artwork and decorative pieces. These hues added a sense of personality and coziness without overwhelming the minimalistic design.

The Final Touches: Modern Meets Bohemian
To complete the look, we curated furniture that was both functional and stylish. I opted for natural textures like woven rattan, light wood, and soft textiles to complement the desert-inspired palette. The space is a blend of modern design and bohemian elements—think clean lines mixed with playful patterns, desert plants in hand-painted pots, and cozy nooks for reading or relaxing.

A Place to Stay: Experience Joshua Tree in Style
After months of planning, painting, and decorating, I’m thrilled with how the studio turned out. It feels like the perfect retreat—both for myself and, hopefully, for future guests. The mix of modern and bohemian elements, along with the desert-inspired palette, creates a space that’s not only stylish but also comfortable and inviting. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful getaway or a base for adventure, I hope this studio feels like a home away from home. I can’t wait to show you the end result!
2024 Update: We ran this airBNB from 2016-2024, but finally shut it down and made it into a long term rental.
