Conceived by Reverend Eddie Garver, the park was officially dedicated on Easter Sunday in 1951. Visitors can explore this peaceful desert sanctuary from dawn to dusk at no cost, making it an ideal spot for quiet reflection. Among its striking features are the impressive Last Supper relief and statues that reach heights of over 8 feet. Despite being lesser-known in the high desert, Desert Christ Park is a hidden treasure that deserves a visit.

To Get There

When To Go

  • The best time of year to visit Joshua Tree National Park is March-May and October-November.
Avoid July & August, it’s too hot to do anything.
  • The winter months of December – February are cold but still doable if you prefer off season travel with less crowds.
  • June and September are on the hotter side, but if you avoid midday hiking you’ll be okay.

The History

Desert Christ Park in Yucca Valley, California, was established in 1951 by Antone Martin, a sculptor and engineer. Martin created the park as a place for spiritual reflection and peace, featuring over forty concrete statues depicting scenes from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. The sculptures were constructed using steel-reinforced concrete and have withstood the desert climate over the decades. The park became a popular local landmark, attracting visitors for its serene environment and unique artistic expressions of faith.

The statues are currently undergoing restorations with the help of a non-profit organization and volunteers. Retired local business owners Kate and Tom Kenny have been working tirelessly to upkeep the grounds, repair water lines, and restore sculptures. The park in financially maintained through donations and grants. If you’d like to donate the Desert Christ Park non-profit, please use the link below.
