Just off the coast of Cancún, Isla Mujeres is a tropical island that offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. If you’re craving pristine beaches, snorkeling and delicious seafood, this small island has it all. We found ourselves lounging on one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and sailing on turquoise waters. Here is a list six unforgettable experiences you won’t want to miss on Isla Mujeres.
When to go
The best time to visit Isla Mujeres is from December to April, when the weather is warm, dry, and perfect for beach activities. If you want to swim with whale sharks, plan your trip between June and September for this unforgettable seasonal experience.
Where to Stay
If you want easy walkability Playa Norte is the best area to stay in. We found a great place to stay on Booking.com.
Our friends stayed at the luxurious Casa Jaguar right on Playa Norte. If you stay here you’ll have you’re own umbrella lounge spots to bask in the sun.
For much cheaper we stayed at Casa Alkimia Town and really loved the proximity to both beach and town, however, we weren’t right on the sand. We were a 5min walk to the water.
Sail on a catamaran
Renting a catamaran is a bit pricey, but so worth it if you’re with a group of friends! Nothing beats the experience of cruising through stunning turquoise waters with drinks in hand, especially when the sun is shining and everyone is in high spirits. Most catamaran tours include stops for snorkeling, swimming, and even paddleboarding, making it a fantastic way to spend the day. We stopped for some snorkeling and swimming along the way. The water is too beautiful not to!
You can rent a private catamaran, or if it’s just a few people or you’re on a budget you can also book a group tour.

Lounge on Playa Norte
For a very good reason, Playa Norte is considered the most famous beach in this region of Mexico. The combination of its powdery white sand and the stunningly crystal-clear water creates an idyllic setting that is simply perfect for swimming, lounging, and sunbathing under the warm sun. We relaxed on the lounge chairs and took a refreshing dip in the warm inviting water. You’ll find everything you need here to enjoy a blissful day at the beach. You can rent lounge spots with umbrellas and order margaritas all day long.

Go snorkeling or diving
Book a snorkel tour to the magnificent MUSA Underwater Museum, an incredible destination where art meets marine conservation. Statues were placed on the ocean floor, becoming artificial reef for the sea animals. Consider pairing this unique experience with a visit to The Lighthouse Reef, known for its breathtakingly diverse marine life and stunning underwater visuals. Lighthouse reef was my favorite because there were so may fish everywhere you looked.
Indulge in fresh seafood
Indulge in mouthwatering ceviche at Mar Bella Fish Market (absolutely delightful!), where the flavors will tantalize your taste buds and leave you longing for more. It’s pricey, but you’re really paying for the view and the top notch service. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something easier on the wallet, you can choose to enjoy equally delicious and satisfying meals at Bahia Del Rey—a great spot that sets the stage for a romantic sunset dinner that you won’t forget. Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in the vibrant culinary scene!

Relax at the Beach Clubs
Relax, sip your favorite beverage, and fully soak up the vibrant atmosphere at the beautiful and lively Mayan Monkey Beach Club or the exquisite Zaza Yacht & Beach Club.
Most beach clubs offer day passes, which include access to pools, lounge chairs, and delicious food and drinks.

Visit Punta Sur & Temple of Ixchel
Escape the bustling crowds of Playa Norte and take a scenic journey to the island’s southern tip, Punta Sur. We rented a golf cart for a leisurely ride, but you can also simply grab a cab. Experience the breathtaking views as you catch an unforgettable sunset. This enchanting area is a historic site dedicated to the revered Mayan goddess of fertility, showcasing the stunning ocean vistas, remarkable indigenous statues and breathtaking jagged cliff edges. Make sure to take your time to fully absorb the rich history and natural beauty surrounding you.
If you want to make this day more of an adventure, you can book a Private Jeep tour to Punta Sur park with snorkeling and lunch.

Isla Mujeres may be small, but it’s packed with incredible experiences that make it a must-visit destination in Mexico. Whether you’re lounging on Playa Norte, diving into the MUSA Underwater Museum, or sailing on a catamaran, this island has something for every kind of traveler.
